Does it hurt to get a piercing? How long afterwards before I can change the jewelry? And how old do I have to be to get a piercing? At Karma Tattoo and Body Piercing, we believe good information leads to choices that are good for YOU! Read on for answers to some common questions, and feel free to stop in or call anytime for a personal consultation.
Does it hurt?
Everyone has a different pain tolerance, but in general piercings aren’t very painful. Some people compare it to getting a shot at the doctor’s office, while others say it’s more of a pinch followed by pressure. Please don’t let the fear of pain stop you from getting a piercing!
Will it bleed?
Some piercings bleed more than others, but bleeding in general is normal and may happen. The amount you may bleed varies from person to person. You won’t bleed for long though, it’s usually done within a few minutes (just like a scratch). You may bleed a little right after you bump/snag a new piercing.
Can I clean my new piercing with hydrogen peroxide or rubbing alcohol?
No. Please don’t use either to clean a new piercing. We sell a cleaning solution designed for piercings for only $5, definitely take advantage of that! If you’d prefer, you can use unscented antibacterial hand soap. See our aftercare instructions for step-by-step instructions.
I just got a new piercing, how long until I can change the jewelry?
We generally recommend waiting at least three months before changing the jewelry. Circumstances may call for switching it earlier like work restrictions or surgery. When you get an oral piercing, the price you pay includes a free downsizing. Your piercer will tell you the date that you can come in and have the jewelry switched.
How does an implant stay in?
A micro-dermal anchor (also known as a dermal or an anchor, and commonly called an “implant”) is a small piece of jewelry we insert under the skin to create a “single point” piercing look. They can be placed almost anywhere (we do have recommendations for where not to place them). At Karma, we use needles to create the pocket of skin that will hold the anchor in place. As your skin heals around the jewelry, it heals around the small holes in the anchor which hold it in. This is why we highly suggest sleeping with a band aid on for the first two weeks. The less your dermal moves, the better it will heal. Please see our aftercare instructions for information on how to take care of your new dermal!
How old do I have to be to get a piercing at Karma?
For most piercings you must be at least 16 years old and have parental consent (this means your parent must be with you). Earlobes can be pierced at any age, but if you’re under 18, you will need a parent to come with you. When you come in, please bring your picture ID and make sure your parent has theirs! Please call us if you have any questions!
What do piercings cost? What does that include?
All piercings cost $25.00; this includes the piercing, basic jewelry, aftercare instructions, and sea salt. There are jewelry upgrades available for every piercing. Upgrades start at $5.00. If you decide on an oral piercing, the $25.00 you pay includes your downsizing!
What do dermals cost? What does that include?
Dermals are $35.00; this includes the piercing, jewelry, your choice of a dermal top (we have a great selection!), aftercare instructions, and sea salt. We sell a cleaning solution designed for piercings that we do recommend, its only $5.00.
Why is it a set price for piercings at your shop but different prices for different piercings elsewhere?
Our goal at Karma is to make sure you, the customer, is happy. We offer our piercings at a basic rate of $25.00 for that reason. Other piercing establishments may charge you $60.00 for a navel piercing and $35.00 for a cartilage piercing. Dermals run $50.00 and up in other local shops, and as much as $90.00 in the Twin Cities area! Ours are $35.00 every day. When you walk into Karma, you know the price and, we hope, you’ll be happy with it.
How long does a piercing take to heal?
A piercing will feel healed before it actually is because they heal from the outside in. In general, it takes a minimum of three months for a piercing to fully heal. Please keep in mind that this does not mean you can take the jewelry out and it will stay open for extended periods of time.
Can I go tanning after I get a piercing?
Yes, you can. However, if you use a tanning lotion, you should leave the area around the piercing lotion free.
Does Karma offer gift certificates?
Yes! It’s a perfect gift and can be used on anything in the store!
